GDC Has Rethink on Direct Access to Dental Hygiene Treatments

The GDC is considering the viability of restrictions that force patients to see a dentist before getting treatment from a hygienist or therapist.
The current situation creates unnecessary costs in having a treatment plan drawn up by a dentist. If a patient can access a DCP (dental care professional) directly, costs may be lower. The GDC discussion paper acknowledges that the question of direct access is a contentious one in dentistry as many hygienists and therapists would like to be able to see patients direct. Patients have also shown a demand to see dental hygienists. To date, this is sill open to decision.
