Google Test Contact Lens Which Can Measure Glucose Levels

Google-smart-contact-lens-prototype-Graphic-635Flame Health Optometry were interested to learn that Google have recently started a project to test a smart contact lens which can measure glucose levels in the tears of the wearer. It is hoped that this device could enable diabetics to better manage the condition.
The lenses use a wireless chip and a glucose sensor embedded between two layers to detect glucose levels. The idea of integrating LED lights into the product to act as warning signals if glucose levels are too high or too low is also being explored by the company.
At present, diabetics use a pinprick of blood from a finger to monitor glucose levels throughout the day; it is hoped that the new lens could remove this painful and uncomfortable procedure from their daily routine. In a company statement, Google have said:
‘It’s still early days for this technology, but we’ve completed multiple clinical research studies which are helping to refine our prototype. We hope this could some day lead to a new way for people with diabetes to manage their disease’.
