Telephone Interview? Flame Health's Top Tips For Success!
During a recruitment campaign, employers are likely to be inundated with CV's and applications, and it is becoming increasingly common for companies to use the telephone interview as a first step in the screening process, to whittle down the list of candidates they will invite for a face-to-face meeting.
Although you might welcome the idea of an initial interview over the phone - meaning no risk of frantically searching for a parking space five minutes before your appointment, no worrying about how you look, and without the daunting prospect of walking into an office full of potential future colleagues - it is still important to take the opportunity seriously in order to give yourself the best possible chance of success.
Here are Flame Health's tips for telephone interview success...
- Prepare - just as you would for a face-to-face interview; make sure you have your CV to hand and any notes you might need, even dress as you would if you were going to the office to really get yourself into the 'professional' zone
- Find a quiet place - away from distractions! Believe it or not, recruiters have reported candidates doing everything from driving to dog-walking during phone interviews; make sure you won't be disturbed for the duration of the call
- Think about the phone - use a land-line if possible to avoid service disruption, but if you have to use a mobile, make sure you have plenty of battery!
- Pace yourself - you may be inclined to rush your answers over the phone to avoid any awkward silences while you consider your response, and telephone interviews are often shorter than face-to-face meetings, but remember to pace yourself and think before you speak
- And finally...smile! It may sound obvious, but smiling on the phone makes you sound more positive and enthusiastic which is crucial in an interview; adopt your best telephone manner to show you are a professional
