Making the NHS paperless – a matter of 'when' not 'if'?

recordsA recent report has revealed that most doctors surveyed do not support plans to move patient medical records online.
The obvious concerns are for patient confidentiality and the safety of information published online, but could the benefits outweigh the potential risks involved?
This idea has been described as a way to make the NHS more 'customer-friendly' and to save money, and as more and more daily tasks move away from paperwork and towards online systems - such as renewing your car tax or applying for a new job - it could be argued that the move is inevitable, once people get used to the idea.
These plans would also enable patients to book appointments online, and email/Skype your GP for minor problems which might not require a trip to the surgery; both of which would increase the convenience of a doctors appointment for most of us, and  perhaps even  encourage us to report problems which may otherwise have been left untreated.
But the concerns still remain, and convincing everybody could prove a difficult task.
