Flame Health Dentistry are currently recruiting for a Full-time, experienced Orthodontic Therapist to join this Orthodontic dental practice based in South West London.
The Orthodontic Therapist will assist the Orthodontist in carrying out orthodontic treatment and providing some aspects of the treatment themselves. They will also carry out treatments to assist patients in an emergency by relieving pain or making appliances safe...
They will not do any treatment planning of patients, but instead will work under the supervision of a specialist to their treatment plan...
Purpose of the job:
Carry out specified parts of orthodontic treatment under prescription from an orthodontist and perform such other tasks as reasonably requested by the principal.
Responsible to:
The Orthodontist and practice manager
Employment duties:
- Provide high quality orthodontic treatment under a dentist’s prescription in accordance with the GDC’s ‘Scope of Practice’. . . -- The performance of these duties is in the context of practice protocols and under the reasonable direction of the principal
- Follow the practice policies and procedures
- Ensure that the required professional indemnity and insurance are in place and that all necessary CPD is undertaken
- Establish, promote and maintain productive working relationships with all members of the dental team
- Liaise with the practice manager on all matters concerning administration, pay and service conditions
- Assist with reception duties and perform other clerical duties required
- Take reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by your work
Key tasks
Provide the following parts of orthodontic treatment as outlined in the GDC’s ‘Scope of Practice’ under prescription from a dentist:
- Clean and prepare tooth surfaces ready for orthodontic treatment
- Insert active removable orthodontic appliances
- Insert active removable appliances adjusted by a dentist
- Remove fixed appliances, orthodontic adhesives and cement
- Take impressions and photographs (when nurses otherwise occupied)
- Pour, cast and trim study or working models
- Make Essix retainers, mouthguards and set up for indirect bonding
- Make a patient’s orthodontic appliance safe in the absence of a dentist
- Fit orthodontic headgear
- Fit orthodontic facebows which have been adjusted by a dentist
- Take occlusal records including orthognathic facebow readings
- Give advice on appliance care and oral health instruction
- Fit tooth separators
- Fit bonded retainers
- Follow practice procedures for infection prevention and control
Provide the following additional services after you have received appropriate training:
- Apply fluoride varnish to the prescription of a dentist
- Repair the acrylic component part of orthodontic appliances
- Measure and record plaque indices and gingival indices
- Remove sutures after the wound has been checked by the dentist
- Identify, select, use and maintain appropriate instruments
- Monitor, support and reassure patients
- Keep full and accurate patient records and ensure that they are regularly updated and stored securely
- Give appropriate advice to patients
- Make appropriate referrals to other health professionals
- Follow all practice policies and procedures
- Follow all dental ethical guidelines including all rules on confidentiality
- Maintain and promote patient confidentiality in relation to patient medical history, details of treatment, financial transactions or any conversation overheard
- Complete laboratory request forms and keep records of all items sent, received and fitted
- Ensure that all necessary laboratory work is returned and ready for each session
- Assist in all clerical and administrative duties as required by the principal
- Report equipment failures or breakages to the practice manager
- Attend practice annual training for medical emergencies and CPR
- Identify your training and development needs and undertake appropriate training to maintain and increase competence in your skills by following an agreed CPD programme to comply with the GDC requirements
- Ensure that professional registration is maintained
- Bring to the attention of the principal or practice manager any concerns about aspects of the practice, its performance or the performance of others in the practice
- Attend all practice meetings as requested
- Attend up to 6 evening practice promotion events per year
Perform such other tasks as the principal shall reasonably request, specifically where there is insufficient clinical work for you to undertake:
- Undertake practice promotion and marketing activities, most likely towards local schools, but not limited to that role
- Undertake practice administration and ‘reception’ roles, including but not limited to making and rescheduling appointments
- Undertake light cleaning duties if required and dispose of practice waste/recycling appropriately, including leaving out waste/recycling material weekly
- Take an active and enthusiastic part in growing patient numbers
