Myopia – College of Optometrists publishes revised myopia guidance

The College of Optometrists has published updated guidance on the management of myopia.

The publication covers the steps optometrists should take when introducing MM. The information that should be conveyed to parents and patients and assesses risks associated with different myopia management options.

The College of Optometrists highlights that practitioners should have the relevant knowledge and skills to be able to offer myopia management.

As with any form of therapeutic intervention, optometrists should obtain informed consent in order to proceed with management.

The guidance advises that optometrists should be able to explain what myopia is and what lifestyle factors may affect the development of myopia.

Risk factors for the development of myopia are outlined in the guidance. The College of Optometrists summarises reasons for practitioners to consider myopia management. Including the availability of effective management options and the link between myopia and developing eye conditions later in life.

The guidance lists factors – such as age of onset and patient compliance – that may influence the effectiveness of management options.
