Flame Health Associates are looking for an experienced and dynamic Theatre Scrub Nurse/Practitioner in Reading, who is interested in working alongside a highly motivated, patient focused team who believe in providing the most current evidence based surgical practice.
Our client are a company that runs hospitals, rehabilitation and health services in the UK. The candidate must be passionate in delivering her/his care and continually looking for opportunities to improve and develop their skills to achieve this. The candidate must have the skills and minimum 2 years’ experience in major orthopaedic surgery, including joints and varied theatre settings and other specialities in a multidisciplinary environment.
Role summary
The post holder will act as a member of the Theatre team and will be responsible for the delivery of safe, high quality patient focused care. Will be responsible for ensuring all resources within that area are used to optimum effect, ensuring the highest quality patient care standards.
· To act as the Named nurse for a caseload of patients undergoing surgery.
· To provide and maintain the highest possible standard of nursing care for the patients.
. To practice in accordance with the recommended operating theatre standards, policies, and procedures.
. Ensure that nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with Clinical Governance policies.
. Assessing, developing and implementing patient care plans whilst evaluating care given, ensuring all documentation is completed accurately, giving and receiving patient centred handovers.
. Adjusts the standard of nursing care plan to meet the specific needs of the patient.
. To prepare the operating theatre for surgery and ensures necessary instruments, equipment and sterile supplies are available for each surgical procedure.
. To anticipate needs, sets priorities and expedites an efficient sterile set up for each surgical procedure.
. To apply knowledge and skills to the techniques and procedural steps of the intended surgical procedure at the same time maintaining the integrity of the sterile field throughout.
. Act as first assistant during surgery under the supervision of the Surgeons.
. Performs the count procedure and concurrently documents counts.
. To monitor and assess patient’s condition, responding appropriately to changes, complications and /or unexpected events in condition, proposing/making changes to care plan as required.
. To act as the patient advocate during the surgical procedure.
. To maintain close and effective collaboration with the surgical team before, during, after, and in between patients.
. To maintain cleanliness and IPC within the operating department.
. To ensure that the theatre department is left stocked up and prepared for the next day.
. Follow guidelines on maintaining patient’s notes and documents, ensuring legibility and accuracy of nursing records, being aware of the legal implications of these documents.
. Directing and participating in the manoeuvring and the positioning of conscious and unconscious patients.
. Handover and transferring responsibility of care to colleagues, ensuring appropriate information and care is relayed.
. Ensure good communication exists between all healthcare professionals caring for patients and to promote harmonious working relationships and safe working practices. Establishes a collaborative relationship with, communicates information with, and coordinates the activities of the surgical team members.
. To take all measures to ensure the safety of patients. To report all accidents/incidents promptly to the nurse in charge, also completing the relevant form correctly.
. To be competent in the administration of drugs used in the theatre environment and to undertake relevant drug administration training to comply with corporate guidelines for the control of all drugs.
. To assist with safe custody, storage and control of all drugs within the department.
. To develop a progressing knowledge of common conditions their management and treatment.
. To be familiar with all departmental and emergency equipment, ensuring it is checked in line with policy ensuring any problems with equipment are reported and the equipment removed from use as appropriate.
. To ensure the safe care and custody of patient’s property and valuables in line with the agreed procedure.
. Collect statistical information and assist in carrying out audit as required in relation to the service, and attend educational audit process for the unit.
. Act at all times in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and to ensure that the nursing procedures are implemented and maintained in accordance with Clinical Governance policy.
. Report and assist in investigating complaints/untoward incidents.
. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
. Attends mandatory in-services and maintains educational certifications as required by the company. Attends yearly mandated organizational and unit educational in-services including fire safety and evacuation plan sessions. Knows how to respond to a fire and/ or an evacuation in the Operating Theatre.
. Participates in continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
. Identifies opportunities for improvement and works through improvement cycles.
