Insight Into Eye Diseases Could Be Provided Through Genome Project
The 100,000 Genomes Project, which is run by Genomics England, is already underway in parts of the UK, and will involve decoding the DNA of 100,000 people. It is hoped that this process could shed some light on inherited eye diseases, as well as cancers and other rare diseases, and help with future detection and treatment. The process is described on Optometry Today's website:
'Sequencing a person’s genome, their entire set of genes, provides information about their DNA and uncovers any genetic mutations which may be linked to a condition. By replicating the process many times, scientists are able to compare genes from many people and identify those which are related to specific diseases, providing potential targets for therapy.'
The project will take four years, to read more visit: http://www.optometry.co.uk/news-and-features/news/?article=6217
