Questions To Ask In An Interview – Flame Health's Top Tips
It is easy to feel as if an interview is exclusively about a potential employer deciding if you are the right candidate for their vacancy, but an important point to remember is that an interview also gives you the chance to decide if this is the right company, as well as the right role, for you.
When an interviewer asks towards the end of the meeting - 'Any questions?', they are not just being polite! Asking questions is a chance for you to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, and also to dig a little deeper into the company and what it's like to work there, enabling you to make an informed decision should you be offered the job. So make the most of this opportunity!
Here are Flame Health's suggestions of good questions to ask and why, so that you can hopefully avoid that nightmare 'mind blank' feeling at the end of a grueling interview:
- Turn it around - ask the interviewer what they enjoy most about working for the company, their personal experience is a valuable resource; this question also allows you to compare your values when it comes to working life with somebody who already works there
- Progression - ask what opportunities for professional development the company offers; this shows that you have ambition and would plan on staying with the company for the foreseeable future, but also allows you to find out if the company invests in their employees
- Management / Reporting - ask how the management structure works - would you have weekly meetings or report on a monthly basis? This shows that you are thinking seriously about the role, but will also reveal if the culture of the company suits the way you like to work
- Doubts - depending on how comfortable you feel, you could ask if the interviewer has any doubts about your suitability for the role; this may seem a little brazen, but it would give you the chance to clear up any grey areas in your skill set and further emphasise your strengths
You can pick and choose from the above to suit the particular role and organisation you have an interview with; make sure your questions are appropriate and fit in with the general tone of the meeting.
