Flame Health’s CV Tips For Graduates…And Mistakes To Avoid
The teams at Flame Health see hundreds of CV's every week, and many of these are from graduates looking for their first opportunity to break into the world of work, so we thought it might be useful to share some of our experience with all of you former students out there...
Here are our top tips for getting your CV noticed by potential employers, and also some common mistakes to avoid!!
1. Keep It Concise - experienced professionals usually have a CV of no more than two pages long, so if you are a graduate with little or no work experience, one page should be fine. Show off your communication skills by condensing all of the relevant information, and omitting the irrelevant!
2. Don't Be Generic - get into the habit of tailoring your CV to each application. This might sound like a lot of hard work when you are applying for several positions a day in some cases, but it really can make all the difference; make it easy for the employer to see how you match the role requirements.
3. Highlight Your Successes - but don't be arrogant! This is a fine line to tread, but the important thing is to understand the job description and match your achievements to this.
4. Avoid Woolly Vocabulary - such as "hard-working", "passionate", "innovative" and "motivated"; if you do use words like these, make sure you can back them up with solid examples, otherwise they appear unsubstantiated and virtually meaningless.
5. Be Key Word Aware - if you apply for a job online, your CV may be scanned electronically before even being seen by a human being! This is where key words are crucial - study the job description and make sure your CV matches it.
