Good News From The 'UK Report On Jobs' – Permanent Placements Rise Strongly In September

The 'UK Report on Jobs' for September has been published by Markit, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation and KPMG LLP, and overall the findings are positive. Here is a summary of the main points in this month's report:

• There has been a marked increase in both permanent placements and temp billings during September
• September saw the sharpest increase in permanent salary inflation since February 2008
• Vacancies continued to rise, however candidate availability fell

Bernard Brown, Partner and Head of Business Services at KPMG LLP, had this to say on the results:
"Improved market conditions, higher activity levels amongst clients and generally stronger levels of confidence amongst employers are certainly one of the major factors underpinning the latest rise in permanent placements... Demand for staff may be up, but the number of individuals putting themselves on the market has dropped for the fifth consecutive month. Perhaps the pay on offer has to rise to encourage staff to make the move."
