More Flexible Hours For GP Appointments Promised
On the penultimate day of the Conservative Party's annual conference in Manchester, David Cameron has said he plans to make it easier for people to make an appointment with their GP at a convenient time, without having to take time off work.
This scheme will see surgeries bidding for funding which would enable them to open from 8am to 8pm seven days a week; it will be initially piloted in nine areas of England starting in 2014/15.
Along with this, the prime minister has said he would like to offer everybody more "flexible access" to their GP, including email, Skype and telephone consultations. He said:
"Many hard working people find it difficult to take time off to get that GP appointment, so having these pilot schemes... is, I think, a very positive step forward."
Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt also said:
"We live in a 24/7 society, and we need GP's to find new ways of working so they can offer appointments at times that suit hard-working people."
It is also hoped that this scheme will reduce the amount of people visiting A&E departments unnecessarily because they are struggling to book a GP appointment for a convenient time.
