'Big Leap' Towards A Cure For Blindness
Flame Health Optometry were interested to hear that an animal study in the Nature Biotechnology journal has revealed that stem cells can be used to repair the part of the eye which detects light.
The study has shown that it is possible to replace the light-sensing cells. This allows light to be converted into an electronic signal by the photoreceptor cells in the retina, which is then sent to the brain.
This development has been described as 'significant breakthrough' and a 'huge leap' forward, and human trials are now a realistic prospect.
