A new study has identified a gene responsible for causing thousands of babies to be born profoundly deaf. The gene mutates by binding to calcium within a cell causing a condition called Usher syndrome type 1.
Within the UK, 1000 babies a year are born with Usher syndrome which causes deafness, night-blindness and loss of peripheral version. #
The research led by Dr Zubair Ahmed, of the University of Cincinnati, analysed 57 people from Pakistan and Turkey and found a protein called CIB2 was affected by the mutations causing deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 suffers as well as other non syndromic deafness.
The breakthrough is hoped to lead to new treatments for profound deafness.
