Weekend Heat Wave Brings Health Warning
The Department of Health urged vigilance as weather forecasters predicted temperatures could top 31 degrees Celsius over the weekend. High temperatures have forced the Met Office to issue a class 2 heat wave alert.
Pharmacists do not have to take immediate action but are advised that high temperatures could be dangerous for the elderly, young children and those with long term medical conditions.
Health advice to be passed onto for patients during the heat wave includes:
- Keep plenty of water to hand
- Avoid going out between the hours of 11am and 3pm
- Make sure you are stocked up on medicines
- Avoid strenuous activity
- Avoid tea, coffee and alcohol
